Faithfood for the Faithful August 6, 2013 Transfiguration of the Lord Readings: Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14; Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 9; 2 Peter 1:16-19; Luke 9:28-36 Insights: Church of the Poor: A transfigured People of God Bro. Rolan Banting, SOWER The context of the Transfiguration of Jesus is that the disciples were disheartened after Jesus revealed His destiny to suffer and die on the cross (Lk. 9:22-27), so He chose James, Peter, and John to witness His glory in the mountain of Transfiguration. The present context is that we, as the Church – the People of God and the Body of Christ (Vatican II, Lumen Gentium) - must transfigure, so that the disheartened faithful may witness the Glory of God. Pope Francis is challenging us to be transfigured as the Church of the Poor, so that we may liberate the poor from their poverty, and be assured that God is not abandoning us in our poverty. Prayer: Father, Jesus revealed His glory, that the scandal of the Cross might be removed from the hearts of His disciples, and that He might show how in the Body of the whole Church is to be fulfilled what so wonderfully shone forth first in Its Head. And so, with the powers of Heaven, we worship You constantly on earth. Amen.
