Fake Insurer Strands Trial For 91 Counts Of Fraud, Forgery, Stealing LAGOS STATE -- A 42-year-old man faces charges on 91 counts of fraud, forgery, and stealing of N3,027,600. Igwegbe Lawrence stood trial before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates Court. He forged the the passbook of Standard Life Assurance Company Nigeria Limited and used it to extort money from 45 traders in Ladipo Market, Oshodi, Lagos. His accomplices, the police say, are still at large. The fraud was detected by one of the marketers of the company who had visited Ladipo Market. The accused emplyed a team of people and sent them out daily with the forged passbooks to convince people to transmit money into the companys account. On one day, the real marketer of the company saw the fake documents, raised the alarm and reported the case to the nearest police station. Thus, the fraudster was arrested, and his accounts frozen. The sums that traders paid ranged from N8,000 to N288,000. Accoriding to the 91 count charge, the accused Igwegbe Lawrence, with accomplices still at large, had between July 2006 and January 2008 conspired to commit felonies to wit, i.e. forgery, obtaining and stealing, at Ladipo market Mushin, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and elected for summary trial. The Chief Magistrate, Ms. Demi Ajayi, asked the counsel to choose a date that would allow more witnesses to be in court. The matter was adjourned till December 9.
