Falana drags US before UN human rights council Written by Matthew Asabor - Lagos Thursday, 25 July 2013 00:00 font size decrease font size increase font size Print Email Rate this item 1 2 3 4 5 (0 votes) раскрутка сайтов AddThis Social Bookmark Button HUMAN rights activist and lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has dragged the United States Government before the United Nations’ (UN) Council on Human Rights over the alleged insertion of a tracking device into a man identified as Jacob Ajomale. Ajomale was said to have been maltreated by the United States’ Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, who forcefully inserted a tracking device into his body through his anus. The tracking device which is otherwise known as chip was said to have been inserted in his body since December 2010. Ajomale in a petition to the United States asked it to get rid of the tracking device from his body. He had also filed a suit before the Federal High court against United Airline and the Nigerian Minister of Internal Affairs demanding $100million and N100million damages for the violation of his fundamental rights to dignity of human person and right to mental and physical health as guaranteed by Sections 35 and 41 of the Constitution and Articles 6 and 12 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act. In an affidavit filed before the court, he stated that he has been living in the United States since April 12, 1997 with a visiting visa and became a permanent resident in February 2008, and never had any criminal record all through the period. That on January 22, 2009, he travelled to Nigeria for his father’s burial and on his way back, he was arrested on February 5, 2009 by one officer Derrick at the BWI Airport in Baltimore, Maryland, who took him to a cold room for nine hours and exposed him to torture in order to make an incriminating statement of using falsified passport in 2001. He stated that he was subsequently arraigned, tried, convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment at the DC jail and Rivers Correction Centre, all in North Carolina. “I was released back to the community on August 11, 2009 at about 7.00pm after being cleared by ICE. But surprisingly I was arrested again by the same officer Derrick on August 15, 2009 on the ground that my release from detention was a mistake. “While in detention at Worchester Detention Centre Snow Hill, Maryland, an ICE officer, William Malone told me I could be released but it was going to cost me money. I told my lawyer about it, who reported to senior ICE officers. “That investigation was carried out and Officer Michelle Rawlings interrogated me and promised to get back to me which she never did, afterwards I became the target of all the officers. “I was hospitalised on 12th July, 2010 at Atlantic hospital for sinusitis and body weakness but was discharged without adequate treatment. I was maltreated by three officers who flung me to an empty steel bed, and I put in a grievance report concerning the issue. In August, 2010, I was moved to Frederick Detention Centre, Frederick, Maryland, and the same aggression continued against my person. I felt some vibration on my bed and reported to the authority but no action was taken.” He stressed that on the 3rd December, 2010, he was invited by the Chaplain Pastor John for Bible study with two other detainees and coming back from the Chaplain’s office, he felt a strange movement in his umbilical cord and showed it to an inmate, Mr Al. “I quickly approached the officers on duty to take me to the medical unit but instead I was crushed on the floor by eight white officers and my pant was opened and a chip was put in my anus. I screamed but no one could help me, he said.
