Fall Practice #4 Notes I wish I came bearing good news, but I - TopicsExpress

Fall Practice #4 Notes I wish I came bearing good news, but I have little to provide. Today was a bad day all around, and despite a few good moments overall Jones and the staff were not pleased. The energy was up early on in practice, but it seems to have dissipated quickly. Nathan Peterman got the first team snaps in practice today. Its hard to say if this was just to see how Peterman would perform with the group or if it was the staff sending a message to Worley. The quarterbacks struggled for the most part. Dobbs overthrew the ball, Worley underthrew it, and Peterman did a few things well but didnt blow anyone away. The running backs had an average day, and there were no wow moments in the open session. The only real noteworthy thing here was the fact that Derrell Scott got some work with the second unit. The receivers continue to play well, but theyve been hurt by the inconsistent quarterback play. No poor performances, but fewer wow catches too. The center-quarterback exchange was an absolute mess today. On top of that, Dellen Hash has been removed from the roster. He was in the hole the other day with an injury, so its unclear if that has forced him to quit or if he simply elected to focus on academics. This led to Jashon Robertson getting some work in at guard today. The defensive linemen had perhaps the best day of the bunch. Nobody had a bad day; quite the contrary. The freshman all looked excellent and have been getting good push up front. The biggest problem they faced was the move of Robertson to offense and the retirement of Allan Carson from football. Carson had graduated, so he has elected to move on to the next step in life. Elliott Berry worked at linebacker. He seems destined to be used in a hybrid role. Nickel, dime, safety, and linebacker are all spots hes gotten work, so expect to see a lot of him. The group has a lot of energy and seems to be the one that is most caught up of the bunch. McNeil and Swafford split the strong safety reps today, with Kelly and Evan Berry getting the second unit reps. Cortez McDowell impresses by showing the physique of a senior and excellent speed and agility. He needs to get caught up on the playbook. DAndre Payne seems locked in at second unit corner. Darr has seemed excellent as the punter, showing a big leg and great consistency. Troy Waites is a fair deal behind Darr. Tomorrow the team goes out in full pads. Expect after the reaming the team got from Butch Jones – both publicly and privately – that they will have a strong day tomorrow.
