Fall is falling gently on Burnaby today. Rain showers and overcast skies, colorful leaves on the forest floors and a sweet, smooth, gentle peace marked the day. And the ducks have returned to Burnaby Lake. The lake is a female presence to me. Burnaby Lake is a she…and she called to me today just before twilight. Awe and precious moments have always abounded for me there but this twilight brought me to a deep peace. The Wood Ducks, Mallards, and Dowitchers have returned and sitting high in a tree I know well, the Great Blue Heron surveyed the marsh with a keen eye. He flew down to the marsh floor of grass and mud to look for little fishes and critters for his supper. The water was blue and sparkling as the sun began to set. The sight of the wonderful Wood Ducks, swimming in pairs, and the relief that they have indeed returned brought my mind to wonder and thanks. Gratefulness is all that can be felt in her presence. The night air is a proper chill now and the Black Bears, Bob Cats and Coyotes soon come out with the descent of the sun into night. I leave the lake reluctantly, while thanking her for her call tonight. This beautiful awe which I felt tonight is the Truth the mind craves to know. Thought is that which prevents the knowing. But In the presence of such beauty, thought stops, and the mind of God’s son is free again to know, and weep, and be grateful.
