Fall is here, school has begun and it’s time to harvest your children’s vegetables. Last spring, the students at East Gloucester Elementary School planted pumpkins, beans, squash, carrots, beets, and sunflowers with Backyard Growers. All summer, while the schools were closed and the kids were at the beach, these plants have been growing delicious vegetables for your children! On Thursday and Friday, September 25 and 26, your students will be harvesting these vegetables. These fresh, healthy foods will be cleaned up and sent directly from each class’ garden plot to the kitchen, where the cafeteria staff will prepare them for the next day’s lunch. If you’re interested in being part of this ultra-local food loop, contact Amy Barry or Joanna Bushfield. Come volunteer with Backyard Growers to have some fun with your students in the gardens or in the cafeteria this month and get them excited about healthy food! ( [email protected] )
