False Installation Of New Chief At Kato On Monday 24th June, 2013, news broke that a new chief has been installed to replace the late Chief of the Kato traditional aread in Berekum – Brong Ahfo region. This news however is an explicit lie and should be disregarded, said the Queen Mother of Kato. According to the Queen Mother (Nana Afia Siraa Ababio III) and the traditional leaders of Kato, they do not know anything about the enstoolment of Kwadwo Kyeremeh a native of Kato who recently returned from Canada as the new Chief of the community. The right procedure to follow before anybody can be enstooled as a chief was not even followed, yet this imposter calls himself the new chief of the Kato community; said the Queen Mother. Nana Afia Siraa Ababio III further elaborated that she is the one who has to choose someone, show him to the Gyaasehene and then the Krontihene for approval and later to other sub chiefs but in this case she none of these was followed hence she denies any involvement in the said enstoolment of new chief of Kato. Speaking further, she said the Abusuapanyin of the Krontihene met with Kwadwo Kyeremeh at the Krontihene’s palace without his knowledge and the supposed enstoolment went on in his absence. To decieve the public more, the nephew of Kwadwo Kyeremeh called Richard Febiri has created a group on social media wesite facebook with the name “Kato (A division of berekum traditional area)” and has incited some of the youth in the community to join the group to propagate this falsehood. They post a picture of the queen mother as well as the purported enstoolment of the chief. However, this is to bring to the notice of the general public that the said new chief of Kato traditional area is a hoax. Bechem School for the deaf appeals for assistance Ms Veronica Ayeh, Headmistress of the Bechem School for the Deaf, at the weekend appealed to individuals, philanthropists and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to come to the aid of educational institution. He said the school, which had 461 students, made up of 289 boys and 180 girls, including the visually impaired, urgently needed boy’s dormitory, classroom block and teaching and learning materials. Ms Ayeh made the appeal when the Catholic University College of Ghana (CUCG) Team of the Entrepreneur Action in Us (ENACTUS), a student group, presented some items to the school at Bechem. This is to enable 210 of students, who were trained by the team in the production of habiscus drink to start producing the drink. Ms Ayeh explained that government subvention was not enough for the running of the school as student enrolment continued to increase. She appealed to the public to assist the school with rice, cooking oil, maize and clothing. Mr Kennedy Kwasi Amenu, President of the team, said the group was linking up with both local and international NGOs to solicit assistance towards the upkeep of the students. Atubiga released from jail Storm News can report on authority that Stephen Atubiga has been released from prison after serving his three-day jail term. The Supreme Court sentenced the Communication team member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday for criminal contempt. He had vowed on radio that President John Mahama and the governing National Democratic Congress will not hand over power even if the Court ruled to that effect in the election petition case. He beat a hasty retreat and started rendering abject apologies on the media even before his appearance before the Court for sentencing on Tuesday. He was released from the Akuse prisons on Thursday morning. He was sentenced alongside Managing Editor of the Daily Serachlight Newspaper Ken Kuranchie who had in a publication questioned the basis of the Court’s invitation of Deputy Communication Director of the main opposition New Patriotic Party, Sammy Awuku, for describing the Bench as “hypocritical and selective”. Atubiga displayed abject remorse when he appeared before the Court. Ken Kuranchie on the other hand attempted explaining himself to the Court and ended up engaging the bench in a back-and-forth argument. He also repeatedly gave conditional apologies despite promptings by the Court to either render an unqualified and unreserved apology or stand his ground that he was right and the Court was wrong. His posture was perceived as belligerent and unremorseful by the Court and so was given a harsher punishment of 10-days. Ken Kuranchie was transferred from the Nsawam medium security prison to the Ho Central facility on Wednesday. A delegation of regional executives of the main opposition New Patriotic Party paid him a visit upon his transfer, he is expected to be released by next week. Peace Council holds capacity building workshop The National Peace Council (NPC) has begun a two-week capacity building workshop in the Ashanti Regional capital of Kumasi to build the capacities of the board and staff of the NPC in peace mediation, dialogue and negotiation for the NPC to fully discharge its mandate. The workshop is being supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Union (EU). Besides, the NPC has engaged the services of two mediation experts – Clever Nyathi from Zimbabwe and Chris Spies from South Africa who are expected to bring to bear their wealth of experience in peace building and conflict management. Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the Chairman of the NPC, Most Rev. Professor Emmanuel Asante stated that the mandate of the council was to facilitate and develop mechanisms to prevent, manage, resolve and build sustainable peace in the country. He added that the council was required to create awareness of the use of non-violent strategies to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts, facilitate the implementation of agreements and resolutions reached between parties in conflicts. Prof. Asante gave the assurance that systems and institutions were being put in place with the NPC working to ensure that the country remained “resolute, undivided and peaceful even after the ruling on the election petition and have confidence in the rule of law”. He, however, asked the factions involved in the Teshie conflict to engage in dialogue and called on the National House of Chiefs to expedite action in terms of facilitating an amicable resolution in Teshie, and added that any violence there affects the socio-economic activities in the national capital. Police launch search for family of lady killed by a speeding car on Friday The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Airport Police has launched a search for the family of a young lady knocked down and killed by a vehicle on Friday June 30 around 10:30 a.m. The young lady, who is believed to be in her late 20s, was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital but she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body has since been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary. An Investigator at the MTTU, Corporal Eric Asare, said they arrested the driver of a salon car for allegedly knocking down the deceased, but he has since been granted bail. Corporal Asare said his Unit is appealing to the public to assist with efforts to locate the family of the victim to retrieve the body and assist with investigations.
