Family...simple word, deep meanings universal connections across the depths of diversity....been road tripping the past 10 days with my oldest son...visiting sites that my family members have been involved in: WW II...Remagen Bridge where my moms brother crossed under fire...another Uncle dropped into Njimagen area in Holland in WWII...then off to my mothers homeland of Alpine Slovenia...lost a great Uncle in 1916 to a Russian Pike-man in Galicia where he was forced to fight for Austria against Russian...7 relatives were executed in 1943 by Nazis as captured Partisans, one was spared to be sent to the death camp at Auswitz....then, I researched church records back to 1620...where a long line of father sons lived in the same house on a farm in the same village...ate/drank with their descendents, chatted, toasted, talked about dreams, hopes, tragedies over time and the endless joy of sharing bread with those who know. Discovered how much Slovenians love their drinks...damn...never met a people anywhere that drink more than them! good times/bad times but one thing I have to say...best damn trip is to MAKE the time with a son/daughter and visit family long lost across the sea.... puts it all into perspective....
