Famous Christian Inventors Science and faith dont always seem like they belong in the same company. Throughout history, however, a number of prominent thinkers in the scientific community have embraced the Christian faith. Many of these individuals invented concepts and products that have improved daily life for millions of people around the globe. Far from being a barrier to curiosity and exploration, their faith broadened their understanding of the world. Sir Isaac Newton Born and raised in England, Sir Isaac Newton is famous for inventing the theory of gravity. Most schoolchildren can recount the story of Newton being thumped on the head by an unexpected apple. Some might argue that a single piece of fruit altered the course of human history. Although he is generally known as one of historys greatest mathematicians and inventors, many scholars agree that Newton was also a deist. He wrote extensively about the biblical books of Daniel and John. His published works had a tremendous influence on modern Christianity. Louis Pasteur Before Louis Pasteur came along, millions of people perished from consuming milk that contained toxic bacteria. Pasteur is most famous for inventing the process of pasteurization, which is a liquid purification method that cleanses beverages of harmful bacteria. Born in France, Pasteur was also a devout Christian. Working mostly in Paris, he is considered one of the founding fathers of microbiology. Pasteur also contributed greatly to the field of medicine. His work served to develop the very first vaccines. Alexander Fleming Mold is such a seemingly simple thing, but it revolutionized modern medicine. Alexander Fleming was a Scottish botanist and pharmacologist who invented penicillin. His contributions to the field of human health care have saved countless lives. Fleming won the Nobel Prize for his achievement in 1945. He was also a practicing Catholic. George Washington Carver George Washington Carver was born with a larger- than-life name; fortunately, he more than lived up to it. Historians believe that Carver was born into slavery in the American South in 1864. A botanist, his work with the peanut plant led him to research genetics. He invented over 100 products that were eventually used in a variety of industries. Carvers scientific contributions have influenced paint, cosmetics, dyes, and plastics. He was a faithful Christian throughout his life. Wilbur Wright Along with his brother, Orville, Wilbur Wright successfully invented the first manned aircraft to take flight in 1903. The brothers are perhaps the most widely recognized inventors in American history. Few people realize, however, how devoutly the Wright brothers practiced their Christian faith. Throughout their lives, Wilbur and Orville refused to work on Sundays. They followed the Old Testament prohibition against working on the Lords day of rest. Christian inventors have given the world a host of wonderful products, discoveries, and theories. Without these brilliant minds, its likely that human society would not have advanced as quickly. Faith is sometimes perceived as an obstacle to scientific progress. For these Christian inventors, however, a deep spiritual connection to a higher power seems to have enhanced their creative abilities.
