“Famous Last Words,” Billy Joel, 1992. One of my favorite “summer is over” ballads, and, remarkably, the last song that Billy Joel would ever record on his stellar, River of Dreams - his last rock ‘n roll album he ever recorded. There is a melancholic delight in “Famous Last Words” that punctuates throughout this unheralded song – the joy of the moment coupled with the pathos that accompanies another summer that has all-too-suddenly vanished. As we have all learned over time, however, one’s memories of the ocean will linger on, long after our footprints in the sand are gone.
