Fans, we are sad to report that the sea lion we rescued on Sunday that had been impaled with a gaff pole has passed away. The animal looked in generally good body condition following his rescue, however, further medical assessment over past few days showed that his health was severely compromised. Blood tests suggested that there was significant wound infection and he was found to have 5 1/2 pounds of rocks (101 rocks) in his stomach. The amount of rocks in his stomach was very unusual. The preliminary necropsy report also indicated severe muscle necrosis at the site of the wound which is believed to be a causal factor in his death. SeaWorld would like to thank the folks who called us after he was seen on the rocks on Sunday. As with all the animals we rescue, we hoped that we could have given this this sea lion a second chance at life.
