Fantastic News reported today by Clinical Research Management, Inc. (ClinicalRM). Before going into the clinical trials currently underway in Liberia, we will rehash a previous treatment used to treat a patient with EVD. One of the US Ebola survivors was able to donate their blood to a nurse infected with Ebola. She didnt actually receive whole blood, but rather plasma. The plasma was collected, from whole blood, by a procedure known as Plasmapheresis. Plasmapheresis (from the Greek πλάσμα—plasma, something molded, and ἀφαίρεσις—aphairesis, taking away) is the process of centrifuging (spinning down) whole blood to until we get the desired blood components; such as antibodies and clotting factors.(wiki) These plasma components can be transfused to treat a variety of autoimmune diseases such as Myasthenia Gravis and Lupus. The first recipient in the clinical trial has received plasma from previously infected patient in Monrovias ELWA Hospital 2 unit. The hope is for Ebola laden antibodies, in the transfused plasma, to eradicate the Ebola virus in an infected patient. One of Times People of the Year, Dr. Brown, is closely monitoring this trial. A generous grant from the Melinda Gates and Bill Gates Humanitarian Foundation allowed this clinical study to take place.
