Fantastic post on No Maccas in the Hill fb page that we have to share: The following is a letter which was left by a Hills resident on McDonalds Facebook page in October last year. Its effectively a promise to McDonalds of what they could expect from this campaign, and the people of the Dandenong Ranges and beyond, should they continue with their intentions to build in Tecoma. As mentioned, this letter was written over a year ago. A campaigner kept a copy of it at the time because they felt it was so well written and so perfectly summed up our determination to stop this development and shine a light on McDonalds behaviour in the public eye. Looking at it now it is a strangely prophetic statement of what was to come. Weve kept all of our promises, and so much more... ____________________________________________________________ Dear McDonalds, The people of the Dandenong Ranges, Victoria have spoken. And you have ignored. Of course. Why wouldnt you? You have an expansionist policy. We are merely another area on a map were your brand has minimal effect. However, if you think the extraordinarily effective grassroots campaign against Alan Jones was something that drew public attention, and some serious dollars away from his radio station, you aint seen nothing yet. Sure, it wont be the public relations disaster that you struggled to recover from after the Super Size-Me phenomenon of course, but our campaign against you will significantly effect your branding in Victoria and will cross online, television and print media. It will be enough to give your long-suffering Australian marketing/PR department a massive headache. And, moreover, make your franchisee epically uncomfortable. We will target them specifically. Sure, head office won’t even notice. Thats why McDonalds has a dedicated international legal team. The corporation deals with these sorts of issues every day. But times have changed. With the Internet, the people have a powerful voice, and we will mobilise thousands of people to challenge the very brand you represent at every level. You are not welcome in our home, quite frankly. And we will ensure in a concerted and savvy fashion that your franchisee and customers are personally targeted, that building is actively interrupted through lawful protest, that unions and construction companies are lobbied at the most local level, and that the many thousands of residents in the Dandenong Ranges are properly informed. We will model the most impressive disobedience against the McDonalds brand in Australia to date. Times have changed McDonalds. You thought Byron Bay was a pain? Watch this space...
