Farewell to the Fair Atlantic. The sunrise this morning was lovely - it started as a faint ribbon of gold where the sea met the sky, then slowly changed to pink and lavender, then the great yellow orb lifted from the sea into the air and laid a path of color along the water. Some of my favorite birds - the gulls and the willets - came along to say goodbye. The beach was drastically changed overnight by the pounding waves; we had commented all week that there were more shells than we had ever seen there before; this morning, they were all but gone. I still found a few to photograph. The surf was very rough, and as we left, the beach patrol was posting red pennants to warn beachgoers of the danger of entering the water. The lessons learned today from the beach: everything is changeable, and she does best who learns to adapt to change, and, there can be great danger hidden in great beauty.
