Fashola swears-in new High Court judges osundefender.org/?p=195958 Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, yesterday sworn-in four new judges to the state High Court. The new judges are Justice Iyabo Olamide Akinkugbe; Justice Serifat Iyabode Sonaike; Justice Abisoye Jubril Bashua and Justice Abdulfattah Molawale Lawal. Governor Fashola, at the swearing-in ceremony held at Alausa secretariat, urged the new judges to avoid corrupt practices in the discharge of their duties. He claimed that names of seven judges were forwarded to the National Judicial Council (NJC) for approval but four were approved. The governor also advised the judges to improve their knowledge of the law in order to operate in the same frequency with their counterparts in the world at large. Said he, “We expect superhuman conduct from you judges, you must be above suspicion and should not be biased in your judgments. “Judges should not only be incorruptible but must be courageous to be able to discharge her duties respectfully,” he said. Governor Fashola also revealed that new High Court buildings have been completed in Epe and Badagry divisions, which he maintained would ease the stress of coming to Ikeja for court matters. The Lagos governor also said that 54 judges are grossly inadequate for nearly 20 million people in the state, adding that more judges are needed to cater for the people of the state. The governor compared the state with New York in United States of America which has a population of over 19 million and over 3, 000 judges. He said the constitution did not empower the NJC to determine the number of judges in a state, adding that Lagos State is financially capable of taking care of any number of judges it desires. Earlier in his speech, the Attorney General of State, Mr Ade Ipaye, had expressed optimism that the new judges would contribute to the growth of the state judiciary. Lagos State now has 39 female judges and 15 male judges
