Fast forward to August 1984, and having spent the last two years doing A levels at school whilst gigging around my home town of Southend-on-Sea, it was time to step out into the world (of insurance). First move after starting work was to secure a bank loan to purchase the Casio CZ1000, an early affordable polyphonic synth (weighing in at about GBP750), followed shortly thereafter by the classic Roland TR-909, snapped up for GBP269 during a bargain basement end of line sale at Turnkey, Charing Cross Road. The MC-202 (a very early sequencer) was purchased for 100 pounds second hand from a local music store with some gig money. This is the first time I had anything like a syncable programmable set up, albeit with extremely limited capacity and functionality, though the limitations were what fuelled the creativity...
