“Father, Forgive them for they know not what they do…” Jesus of Nazareth IF WE CANNOT FORGIVE THEN WE CANNOT FULLY LIVE - Remembering “the Saint of 9 11” - Fire Chaplain Father Mychal Judge – my friend in the Fellowship of the Spirit – sober for decades when his life ended on 9 11 and he was called home to God. He was at the North Tower moments after the first plane struck. Debris was crashing down from100 stories above injuring hundreds. He went into the eye of the storm to help the fallen and as He was kneeling over a victim - administering Last Rights - debris struck him and took his life. Father Mychal was a pillar of A.A. in New York City - loved by all who knew him and remembered by anyone who ever met this extraordinary soul. I had the great joy of hearing him share his personal recovery story at least two dozen times and enjoyed the pleasure of his company many times in various coffee shops all over Manhattan during fellowship after meetings. / His prodigious Recovery Meeting attendance should be proof enough for his Canonization for Sainthood. It was nothing short of a miracle that he attended as many recovery meetings as he did. When I was gearing up to do my first 11th Step I sought his counsel and he gifted to me one of his favorite Rosewood Rosaries…as he handed it to me he said this is to help your scattered mind to focus as you endeavor to improve your conscious contact with God and you understand Him” At this moment I am in a Chapel at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine - wearing Mychal’s Rosary. I was wearing Father Mychals rosary as I attended his funeral service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral post 9 11. The Cathedral was over capacity - Standing Room Only - 3,000 people shoulder to shoulder and it is safe to say without exaggeration that at least 2000 of those mourners were A.A.’s from all over the 5 boroughs – showing up powerfully to honor our fallen “friend of Bill W.” Mychal had a favorite prayer which he wrote. He had this prayer printed on little business cards which he handed out prodigiously at 12 Step Meetings. FATHER MYCHAL’S PRAYER: Lord, take me where you want me to go; Let me meet who you want me to meet; Tell me what you want me to say and keep me out of your way.
