Father to me about his 14 year old daughter: Yeah, she sings pretty but can you make her sing loud!? In opera, there are several categories of voice besides vocal range. The tone, timber and volume of a voice also places it in a category. This young woman was a coloratura. A coloratura singer has a lighter, more flexible and fluid voice. A dramatic is a dark, powerhouse singer and a lyric is somewhere between the two. You cannot take a voice and literally change its character. You can develop range, strength and volume but ONLY to the level of the voice type. Trying to develop a voice beyond its natural level/type is a voice destroying activity that will lead to nothing but frustration!!! Lesson: sing the genre of music that fits your natural vocal category, do not try to fit your voice into an unnatural genre for your vocal type!!
