Faye Matthews, 87, of North Abington Twp., died Thursday morning at Mountain View Care Center in Scranton. She was the wife of the late Clifford M. Matthews, who died in 2002. Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Marshal and Eunice Deats Smith, she was a graduate of Waverly High School. Faye was employed at various positions before her marriage to her husband, Clifford. After her marriage, she devoted her time to taking care of her family, which included 24 foster children over a period of years. Later in life, she worked as a housekeeper and babysitter in the Abingtons. She was a member of the Waverly Community Church, and held various positions throughout the years, such as Sunday school teacher, head of the CYC and also various administrative positions. Faye also enjoyed animals, music, baking and growing flowers in her garden. Surviving are two sons, Nicholas Meo, North Abington Twp.; and Eugene Meo, Dumont, N.J.; three daughters, Sylvia Estrella, Jacksonville, Fla.; Donna Kutch, Simpson; and Dorothy Veno, Scranton; a sister, Joan Sickler, Nicholson; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Marshal and Calvin Smith; and a sister, Elaine Mack.
