Fear Mongering Two Muslim videos have appeared on the internet in the past few days that are inspirational. The first is the speech by 17 year old Pakistani child education activist Malala Yousafzai on receiving the news that she is a joint winner of this years Nobel Peace Prize. Malala was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen in October 2012. One of her messages is to stand up for what you believe and not to live in fear. You can see it here bbc/news/world-29575321 The second is a video made by some young British Muslims who are using social media to stand up and say that ISIS do not represent their faith, that killing innocent people is wrong and against a core teaching of Islam which is not to do harm to yourself or others. The building rhetoric of terrorism and anti- terrorism both play on peoples fears and leads to distrust and hate.(To which some of the comments under the Not In My Name video are sad testimony ). I have lived and worked in many Muslim countries. I have never felt afraid because I know that the vast majority of Muslim people are peace loving. In fact the first words Muslim people often say to you when meeting is As-salamu alaykum peace be upon you. So as you travel to work or school or where ever in the coming days, the following fact may help you get the threat to your life into perspective.... 212 people have died on our roads so far this year. No one has been beheaded in the street by one of our Muslim neighbours .
