Fears #UniversalCredit will leave #tenants struggling @natfednews Seven in ten not ready for shift to #online #benefits system There are fresh concerns that people on low incomes will struggle to access the digital service for Universal Credit, according to new research from the National Housing Federation. According to a new survey of working age social housing tenants affected by the welfare reforms conducted by Ipsos MORI: * Four in ten (40%) affected by welfare reforms don’t have internet access, and a further 30% say they would not be confident making a benefit application online(3) * Nine in ten (92%) would prefer benefits to be paid direct to their landlord rather than their own accounts(2) * Two thirds (68%) of those who manage money on a short term basis are not confident budgeting monthly(5) Universal Credit, which is due to be rolled out nationally by 2017, replaces six existing #welfare benefits, including housing benefit, with a single, monthly household payment. People applying for benefits will have to apply via a new online service. The new Ipsos MORI survey(1) that four in ten (40%) do not have access to the internet and of those who do, half (51%) admitted they wouldn’t be confident making a #benefit application online (equivalent to 30% of all respondents).
