Feature Friday: STETSON Hats When one thinks of Texas, cowboys, campfires and cattle ranchers may come to mind. Stetson Hats of Garland, Texas started in 1865, and has done plenty to help prolong that image by the gallon. John B. Stetson, founder, started off with $100, $10 of fur, a small rented room and tools for hat building. Trained by his father, a master hatter, he applied his skills to a disrespected trade. Hatters were then seen as lazy and unreliable crafters—those who made their money then went out to have fun. Stetson changed all that with his company. Today Stetson is one of the largest hat factories in the country, producing hundreds of styles of hats. Because they are made in America, and part of our authentic heritage of the country’s expansion into the South and West, Stetson is seen as an integral part of economic and iconic history.
