February 18, 2014 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? – Ecclesiastes 2:24-25 The sad reality of King Solomon’s wise observation is that it is true. We may work very hard to prepare for a bright future for our children and our children’s children, but in reality, this brings nothing much for ourselves. We leave whatever riches we have amassed and toiled for in the hands of our “next-in-lines” and as the word of God said, we are not even sure if our children will spend them wisely or foolishly. The word of God for today encourages us to find a balance – to find a way to enjoy whatever it is we worked hard for. As a favorite phrase at work says: work hard and play hard. While it is important to secure a bright future for our kids as what our parents have so faithfully done for us, we should never forget the NOW. This is a reminder to look at how we live our lives today and find opportunities to enjoy them. Happy moments create for us lasting memories and deeper bonds with loved ones we shared our time with. By enjoying the now, we also tell God “thanks for giving me a wonderful and enjoyable life.” Let us not be too stressed preparing for the future that we lose on celebrating the life that we have now. And when we do celebrate, let us always remember the God who gave us the life we ought to be enjoying. Today we say a prayer of thanks and appreciation because God allowed us to enjoy our life now with family and friends. And if there is any chance for us to make up for lost time… it is NOW. Prayer – Lord, thank You for giving us the opportunity to prepare our tomorrows. Give us the wisdom and the blessings to pave the way for our children and theirs. We ask for Your forgiveness, however for the times we fail to enjoy Your gift of the present as we become too worried of what the future has in store for us. As we spend each day, may it be filled with a deep feeling of gratitude for the NOW that You have given us, and help us to always enjoy every moment spent with our loved ones.
