Fed up football fan Edward Shirt has had all his Newcastle United kit put up for sale after he switched his allegiance to a Premier League rival on the eve of the new season. His mum Katie Mellor sparked transfer activity of her own after posting his Magpies wardrobe of 20 Newcastle United shirts, five pairs of shorts and two pairs of socks on the internet auction site eBay. Bidding, which had crept through the £60 barrier on Thursday, ends on Monday. On the site, Katie, 42, said: “Genuine reason for sale as my son now supports Manchester City!” Speaking from the family home in Prestatyn, North Wales, she said: “Imagine the amount of handbags and shoes I could have bought over the years instead of the kit.” It’s caused a bit of work at home as well, as Edward’s bedroom has had to undergo a makeover to turn it from a Magpies shrine to a Manchester City one, with curtains, flags, scarves, rugs and wallpaper all being swapped. Katie said Edward decided to change teams after his 13th birthday recently so he could go to games with his dad Leigh Clayton, 41 and older brother Benjamin, 17, and support the same club as them. “They support Manchester City, whose ground is much easier to get to from here,” she said. “To get to Newcastle it’s about five hours by train and you have to change numerous times, whereas it’s a direct route to Manchester from here.” Edward began supporting the Toon after his dad bought him a pair of goalkeeper’s gloves when he was just two. The youngster said: “I asked which club they belonged to and he said Newcastle United. It started from there. “It’s been fun supporting them but also a bit frustrating. “My favourite player was Andy Carroll, but they transferred him. Then it was Demba Ba, and then they transferred him as well. Then it was Fabricio Coloccini.” He added: “I’m not changing because City are more successful. I just want to go to games with my dad and brother and support the same team.” Mum Katie said Edward hadn’t gone to many Toon games, although he went with his family to the match last season at the Etihad Stadium when the Magpies got thrashed 4-0. “When all the goals went in he kept quiet while his dad and brother celebrated,” she laughed. Ironically the Toon take on City in the opening game of the season at St James’s Park on Sunday. Will it be divided loyalties for the youngster? “No. I want City to win as I’m a City fan now,” he said.
