Federal Ministry accused of treating GB as colony Dawn report GILGIT: The GilgitBaltistan Bar Council has accused the federal ministry of Kashmir affairs of treating the region as a colony and ruling it through remote control. The bar council has written a letter to the Senate`s Standing Committee on Human Rights, highlighting the deprivation of the people and asking it to press the federal government to give GB its constitutional status. The letter has been sent to the committee chairman Afrasiab Khattak. The letter states as the status of GB remained unclear due to unresolved Kashmir dispute, saying that GB people didn`t have the constitutional and political rights enjoyed by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. `The time has come when the parliament, the Supreme Court, the government and other concerned institutions came forward and take steps for making the people of Gilgit-Baltistan part of the mainstream,` the letter demanded. The letter stressed that GB held crucial strategic importance and thus it should be treated like other federating units of Pakistan. The bar council recalled that the GB people, after liberating their area, had acceded it to Pakistan voluntarily, but the federal minister of Kashmir affairs had been treating the region as a colony. A copy of the letter has also been sent to the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Chief Judge, GilgitBaltistan Supreme Appellate Court, chief judge of GB chief court, Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court, GB governor and chief minister and GB Council chief. epaper.dawn/?page=21_07_2014_007
