Federal agencies are even using the existence of multiple email accounts as an excuse to delay Freedom of Information Act requests from the press, or to try to charge exorbitant amounts for the information. The Labor Department “initially asked the AP to pay more than $1 million” for a list of its email addresses, the AP said, citing the amount of time and manpower it supposedly would take to produce them. Much as Internal Revenue Service supervisors tried to pass off the targeting of conservative groups as simply “bad customer service,” a department spokesman later called the cash demand a “mistake” and provided the email addresses.
