Feel like sharing my essay regarding faith that I wrote for the public speaking competition a few weeks back. If youre keen, just continue reading :) . . . . It seems rather peculiar for a teenager like me who lacks experience to talk about faith. But of course, I do have my fair share of moments in life. It is truly impossible to lay it out into a single sentence to ultimately comprehend the meaning of the word faith. Yes, such a simple word that carries boundless perspective of what it truly means. To some, it simply means to believe in the doctrines of a certain religion or without solid evidence. But to most, though, it’s something that’s grasped unto so tightly up to an extent where fragments of the human timeline has come to be. A very good morning I bid to Masters of Ceremony, honorable judges, much valued timekeepers, teachers and of course, the revered audience. I’d like to give you a brief introduction about myself. My name is Leon Kho, Senior 5, representing the Surian Campus in our annual public speaking competition today. I stand before this very stage to give you an interpretation of the character faith in my eyes. I’d be a fool to give you a definitive statement about faith, because every individual bears their own perspective of it. There is a surfeit amount of events that could be triggered with a boost in one’s faith. A plethora of changes could be erected to give a much dramatic impact upon an individual just with a little faith. Let me put this in an exemplary elaboration; Imagine having to rush into the exam halls, with a blank state of mind, forgetting completely everything that you memorized whilst burning the midnight oil last night. You start feeling uneasy as you analyze through the papers that you know you’d never dirty. You’d then chant, “Have faith in yourself, you can do this!” in your mind, in hopes of being able to scribble out bits of information that you’d somehow manage to remember. That’s when you start to look up for a higher being to distraughtly pour your worries to. That’s faith for you, audience. I’d like to make this abundantly clear; I never really had much faith in myself. Not at all. Whenever somebody gave a judgemental evaluation about myself, it takes time to just shrug it off my mind. I constantly overthink about how much of disappointment I am to others, not being able to fulfill one’s desire. Constantly, I was assigned tasks that I always doubt I could accomplish, simply because I had no faith in myself. It was an exasperating period of my life, having nothing to get a grip on. I had to bear with the criticism. Soon, faith then became a fleeting delusion. At one point, I felt just like Atlas, the Grecian titan that bore the whole world in his shoulders, as he trembled and struggled. Yesteryear, my grandfather was involved in a small accident that lead him through several operations. Despite his battle for almost a month, he didn’t make it, losing to organ failure. As he passed, it was a grim moment for all of us. What’s worse was that I felt utterly bad for not doing something for him to carry on with. With that in mind, I gradually started doing things in a much stable way, believing that there is someone out there who’s constantly looking out for me. My source of faith then eventually grew spontaneously. I soon developed a habit of equalizing everything on the top of my plate, so that they don’t topple over. With my newfound faith, I then became someone who would radiate positive energy around people. You see, to clench upon a said faith can help to realize many things. It helps to realize that we have the ability to succeed in what we do. Of course, people can succeed without faith. But the emotional roller coaster that they go through on their way to success will be much more intense that those who have faith. Dear audience, I’d like to point out something before I excuse myself. You can be a professional at what you do, but you’ll never be the big shot if you don’t have faith in yourself to risk what you’ve got. It will always be the strong mindset, and of course, the faith inside of you that will carry you further. Like Plato once said, “We are twice armed if we fight with faith”. Even a kid with questionable morals like me, has a little faith in something too.
