Feeling kind of crappy about the world today. Natural disaster exacerbated by climate change ravages poor communities...again...while meaningful govt action to prevent it from getting worse seems distant. Heinz and Blackberry laying off hundreds of workers in Ontario - Peoples lives and whole communities thrown into chaos at the whim of big Capital. Populace distracted by Fantastic Ford Fiasco and Super Senate Scandal that contribute to complacency, cynicism and apathy. Theyre all crooks anyways Sometimes I just want to scream WAKE UP!!!...and then I feel ashamed that Im not doing more, being more courageous. Wonder if I should be screaming into a mirror. People see natural disasters and scramble to donate...and I think that that is a good instinct. People want to help each other. People want to do their part...particularly when that part really feels like a PART of something bigger. My hope is that this desire to do something, to give up something to support each other because we do actually care can become the fuel for movement and change. I wonder when enough people will agree that really making things better may mean undertaking deeper, wider transformations. What will it take? The Climate Justice movement gives me hope. Climate change IS a social justice issue that has everything to do with race and class on so many levels. Poorer darker skinned PEOPLE are experiencing the worst of something caused disproportionately by richer lighter skinned PEOPLE. Working together on this means building awareness, sensitivity and humility...particularly for the more privileged folk like myself. I think it also means really trying to raise each other up and create space for ourselves and others to make mistakes. This is all good work.
