Feeling particularly nostalgic for the clunky-and-chunky tape players of yore, British developer and maker Matt Brailsford has made one that plays Spotify playlists — but still uses actual cassette tapes. First, Brailsford gutted a tape player, loading in a DIY Raspberry Pi computer board that runs Spotify-enabled MusicBox software. He then inserted NFC tags into old cassettes, each with ID numbers that correspond to matching Spotify playlists. All the buttons on the cassette player are supported, as well as two-sided tapes, and the whole project only took a few weeks. Watch the player in action below.
