Fellow Democrats, As a new week begins, I thought I would take a moment to reach out to you with an update on what I have been working on, as well as some thoughts on the road ahead. It’s been an amazing few weeks traveling across the state talking to Democrats about our future and listening to great ideas about reclaiming the majority. I was humbled and energized by the endorsement I received last week from my colleague Sen. Jason Carter, as well as others who are excited about creating new energy within our party. I know that it will take an incredible effort to turn the tide for our party. Simply put, we must be in this together because what we are up against will take all of our talents and all of our resources to successfully change the future of our state. For too long we have watched the Republican majority take apart our public school systems bit by bit: increasing class size, reducing teaching hours and changing course on curriculum based on every political whim. Georgia remains near the bottom of the national education pack. Democrats have watched Republicans give big tax handouts to large corporations, while reducing unemployment benefits to hard working Georgians who lost jobs through no fault of their own. We Democrats have had a front row seat to the war on our women. Whether through legislation or now by an administrative mandate, women’s access to reproductive health care continues to be assailed. And although some 650,000 Georgians are without health care, Republicans refuse to accept millions of dollars that would not only provide that care but also inject money into local communities for health care jobs and related services. The Republicans have a reckless disregard for the citizens of this state and now is the time for Democrats to stand firm and demand accountability. I believe we can do that together. If we fund our party, build our program and engage our members, I believe we can turn Georgia Blue again! Democratic principles are so much more than ideas – they are core value beliefs that will make a real difference in people’s lives. I hope I can count on your vote and support in the weeks ahead. I believe we stand at a critical crossroads and Georgia’s serious challenges must be met head-on. We simply cannot keep doing what we’ve been doing and expect a different outcome. Together, we can help shape a Georgia grounded in the belief that each citizen is equal, every child should have access to a great education, every person should be able to find a job that pays well and every Georgian should expect a transparent and open government. Please don’t hesitate to call me if I can answer any questions. My cell phone number is 678-283-4201. Most sincerely, Doug Stoner
