Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is one of the many practices that we have as a nation agreed upon is dangerous and harmful to society. Like many, I am in support of extracting and using some of the activities in traditional initiations so long as they enhance the fabric of society and the cultural norms that we have accepted as beneficial in today’s environment. Indeed, my last born recently underwent one. That said and in thanking the many that protect our girls from this practice, I wish to share that I consider it unacceptable for NGOs to strip and inspect girls as a condition for support in education. I am particularly bothered by the press reports about the Girls’ Centre in Suswa hinging their support of girls on this intrusive, humilating – and subjective – examination, and thank Head Teachers like Ms. Mooti from Statehouse Girls, for going the extra mile to support needy pastoralist students who may have fallen victim. It is an outrage if you ask me!
