Female orang-utan called Tilda uses unusual calls to communicate with keepers at Cologne Zoo in Germany, often to indicate that she wants food. Although the sounds she produces are difficult to compare to human speech, the scientists claim the movements she makes require the kind of fine control over her lips and tongue that was thought to be restricted to humans among primates. They believe the findings may help to explain how human speech first evolved.
