Fergus C. Lane Nuremore Golf Not even Hercules, when commanded to - TopicsExpress

Fergus C. Lane Nuremore Golf Not even Hercules, when commanded to perform his twelve tasks, was asked to shoulder three well nourished Lanes around the undulating Nuremore coursein the midst of a heat-wave. This was the daunting task set before former footballing great, Eamon Tavey, last Friday in the Lions Classic. Manfully he accepted the burden and when the 18th hole was complete Eamon, Cormac Lane, Aidan Lane and Fergus Lane had 91 points in the bag and victory. Admittedly the sweat was bubbling out of the Donaghmoyne native but he never once wilted and with a display of pars and birdies unparralled in Nuremore history belied his lofty handicap. The 91 points were totally necessary as coming up close behind was a team consisting of another Lane called Keith, Gerard Connolly and a Dublin and Donegal pair who were only getting into their stride towards the very end. They in turn had to hold off the efforts of an all local outfit in the guise of Shane Cassidy [ home from his sojourn on the American continent] Gerard Birdy, Steven Quigley and Peter Ward. In the non GUI section of a terrifically organised and supported event Ep Koemets brought home a bevy of Mullhollands in the form of Mark, Martin and Brendan. The organisers, Gene McKeown and Cathal O’Gorman in particular, were an absolute credit as this was one of the best organised and supported events seen in Nuremore for many a day. Gavin McMahon simply can’t avoid the headlines in Nuremore this year. Along with fellow teammates, Darragh Kelly, David Eakin, James Kiernan, Andrew Carolan and Captain Neil McGeown they were successful in the Junior Cup against Carnalea in Dungannon. Considering this is the first time ever for a Nuremore team to enter this competition they have performed heroically in reaching the last 8 in Ulster. As if that was not enough glory for Gavin he shot the lights out in the weekend competition with a wonderful 40 points off a seven handicap. No wonder the awestruck fans are asking ‘Is there no end to this young man’s talent’? Second with 38 points is up and coming Alan Birdy who is one of the finest strikers around the Northeast and will surely have more feast days than fast days, golfing wise. Third , also with 38, was rock-steady Thomas Hughes who was an unfortunate absentee for the President’s Prize or he would have given the victors something to think about. The burden of losing three matches at home in the J.B.Carr Ulster Semi-final proved too much for Nuremore when they faced Carnalea on Home ground last Wednesday. Despite excellent victories on the day from Frank Fidgeon and Jim Agnew and Liam Daly and Fergus Lane the deficit proved insurmountable and Carnalea were ecstatic in bounding forward to meet Portrush in the provincial final. Gerry Magee’s Cowdey team are still in with a chance of glory as they won their home match against Edenmore by 2.5 to 1.5. Gerry says they have their work cut out but, thankfully, often in the past when their backs were to the wall they played their finest golf. Let’s hope they can repeat the exercise.
