Fergus C. Lane Nuremore Golf When Michael Edwards took to the skies and became Britain’s first Ski Jumper he became known as ‘Eddie the Eagle’ and was admired world- wide, not so much for his skill on the jumps but for his audacity in daring to venture where no Brit had gone before. Well Neil McGeown’s Junior Cup team will be known for exactly the same reason and as yet their great venture is still alive and thriving. On Saturday in Rossmore they eliminated Enniskillen, one of the favourites to lift the Ulster crown. Being the selfless captain that he is Neil did not play as he felt he was slightly off form but sent out James Kiernan in the van and he came home with a tidy 5/4 victory. Next up was Gavin McMahon and try as only Gavin always does he could not master his opponent and tasted defeat for the first time on the 16th. Young David Eakin had not a nervous bone in his body as he got the better of his man on the14th. Andrew Carolan was slightly out of sorts on the day and he succumbed on the 13th. With the score now standing at 2/2 it was on the shoulders of the youngest team member, Darragh Kelly. Despite losing the 16th to a birdie Darragh held on manfully and, having halved the 17th, won the 18th to register a 2 up victory and merit the plaudits and gratitude of his captain and fellow team members. Gerry Magee took his Junior Cowdy warriors to Killymoon and came away with a very creditable 3/1 victory. It is only half time in this affair but Gerry’s team look to be in a very strong position to advance to the next round. First out were Frank Fidgeon and Seamus Tierney and with Seamus especially playing out of his skin they won this encounter 2/1. Cousins Brendan Rafferty and Big John Kiernan were never really under the cosh and won on the 18th as did Noel McNally and Brian Busby[ surely a pairing conceived in heaven]. It is kind not to mention the last pairing that were completely off-form on the day but, with the score at 3/1 and a home match still to come, things are looking very rosy. Cathal Birdy took his Ulster Cup team to Newtownstewart and was lucky to come away with a match and a half out of seven. It was left to the old stalwarts, Thomas Hughes and Liam Daly to stop the ship from sinking completely but with 1.5 matches Cathal still feels he is in with a chance. The Crumlin Rumble is still going on at Nuremore and if you have not done so yet get two mates and enter a team for this very worthy cause. The Nuremore Classic, sponsored by O’Gorman’s Super Valu and LMFM Radio, will take place on Saturday the 29th of June. As this is the day Monaghan play Cavan in the semi-final get an early slot and proceed to Clonesafterwards to give Monaghan [eschew the Cavanites]your support or watch it in the comfort of the clubhouse with a bite and a beverage in your fist.
