Few minutes ago I saw an old man in his 70s holding a stick struggling to cross the street. His fear of losing energy to continue the night in the cold streets of Seattle crawls over his shaky and skinny hands. He stopped me asking, dont you think Im human? I was like, sure you are sir! He smiled I dont feel I am anymore! I asked him if he needs anything, he asked for a hug. I hugged him and tapped his back and asked him, did you have anything to eat tonight? He broke in tears .. Then he said,no one asked me what I would like to eat. I followed,I can bring you whatever you want, what are you craving? He answered, turkey sandwich and a coke. I ran to the store and got what he asked for. When I stepped out to find him, he disappeared. I looked around the block for him and found him leaning by the wall. I approached him and said in joy, here you are buddy! Here is what you wanted (offering him the food). I brought additional fruits and an extra sandwich. He returned the fruits in dignity and the sandwich. Then he said all what I need is one sandwich and soda. I am walking back to my comfortable warm hotel and cant stop thinking what happens to old man now. It left me with a question, is that what we have become? A nation with more wealth than empires in their golden ages that cant provide basic needs of humanity to our weak and elders. In NYC people huddle on steam in time square to jerk them warm in the cold as the shelters cant take anymore after cuts in spend not on military but on basic needs for a human being. Grab some fruits in your bag and stop for a moment when you pass another old man, ask them simple questions:whats your name? How have you been? Joke with them, ask them if they would like some fruits. Ask them what they need for this cold night. Make them feel part of the community. Totalitarianism tried to strip people from their right to think that they deserve to be treated as humans... I hope this is not what we have become. Think about fiscal year and whatever big economic theories you want to copy or adopt BUT stop yourself for a second and think human. I hope I channeled your words to others old man .. Hope you found some warmth tonight old man and sleep in peace buddy.
