Fiery 200m - Monster Final Set To Bring House Down Published: Saturday | March 29, 2014 0 Comments Paul Clarke, Gleaner Writer The boys Class One 200m final is shaping up to be the most exciting event at this years ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships with the strongest line-up in recent memory, and all eyes will be looking to see what could be the most fascinating race at this years Championship. It will feature hot favourite Zharnel Hughes of Kingston College, along with Jevaughn Minzie from Bog Walk, Calabar Highs Javon Francis, his teammate Michael OHara and Martin Manley, the St Jago speed merchant. If this race lives up to its top billing, expectations are that Usain Bolts 2003 record of 20.25 seconds could fall. At least, thats the view of Kingston Colleges head coach, Orville Byfield, who predicts that his athlete, Hughes, will set the final alight with a new record. Zharnel is in good shape as we saw in his semi-finals, and we are expecting a great run from him in the final, said Byfield. In fact, if he enters the race in the right frame of mind, Bolts record will go and I am also optimistic that he will run sub-20 here because he is a phenomenal talent, added Byfield. He ran 21.20 seconds in the preliminary round, but stepped it up a notch to obliterate the semi-final field, leaving many counting on a new 200m record later this evening. Hughes demolished the field to win his semi-final in 20.32 seconds, a mere seven-hundredth of a second outside Bolts Championship record. Minzie, who won his semi-final in 20.37 seconds, could upset the KC apple cart if he manages to get in front of the talented Hughes and stay there at the end. He should not be written off. Calabars Javon Francis looked good in his heat with a time of 20.58 and will hope that his superior speed over the 400m will serve him well against his opponents. With St Jagos Martin Manley in 20.57-second form coming into the finals, the race for the silver and bronze is literally a race within the big race, as he will also be counted on to track Minzie and Hughes, while contending with Michael OHara of Calabar, who qualified for the final in 20.60 seconds. OHara is said to be nursing a toe injury and clearly was not at his supreme best when he failed to qualify for the Boys 110m Hurdles, after finishing a disappointing third. OHara then false started in heat three of the 100m, but will want to redeem himself with a strong performance in the 200m, but that appears to be more dependent on his injury than quality. Hughes times are fast and he has not yet been pressed, so all things being equal, we will see him breaking the record in an exciting final; he is that good, said Byfield.
