Fifty years ago, the Civil Rights movement opened a new chapter of its history with the creation of the Mississippi Freedom Summer. College students were recruited to volunteer for the summer registering African-American voters; many of the students stayed involved in Mississippi elections that fall and even in subsequent election cycles. The many young people who risked their lives to stand up for their principles created an inspiring tale of large-scale grassroots political organizing. Next summer - the 50th anniversary of the Mississippi Freedom Summer - will be the perfect opportunity to harness the energy and outrage expressed this past summer at the Moral Monday protests. The 50th anniversary will attract significant media attention next year, creating an even greater opportunity to recruit highly motivated, energetic and idealistic young people into 2014 state legislative races.
