Fifty years ago today...FIFTY...the Beatles first played Boston. The old Boston Garden. This is a Boston press conference from that day. Mind blowing. Imagine going to work, and having an assignment editor say, Bob, head down to the Madison, ask John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr a couple of questions. Of course, at this point, most thought the Beatles would be a passing fad, probably like New Kids or something. No wonder the Beatles got fed up with this whole charade just two years later and quit touring forever. Instead, no one knew this, but this was the very start of a cultural revolution that is still being felt today. And as for the Beatles, fifty years later, two of them gone, yet they are still the biggest selling, most influential rock group of all time. No one else even comes close. This week the band released a box set of its original albums on mono vinyl. Mono. Vinyl. As in records. Price? $300-400. The boxes are being snapped up. Thats staying power. If I put myself back to 1964, I dont even know what I would ask them, other than the silly questions put to them here. If you listen closely, you will hear a young Gary LaPierre, the retired WBZ radio legend throw in a couple of questions. As you might expect, Garys questions are not silly. Thats why Gary is a legend. Thanks FB friends for enduring my Beatles madness. But you know what? This is a sad and brutal world, filled with violent and selfish people. Many days, I think the bad guys are winning. But here are the Beatles, fresh, young, brimming with optimism. They are writing songs that not only defined their own generation, those songs are lifting ours too. Still. And you know that cant be bad. https://youtube/watch?v=-veVpehMOPw
