Fifty years ago today at approximately one o clock I had just put Justin and Martha to bed for ( I hoped) a nap. The TV was on in the background as I ( 5 months pregnant with David) rested on the couch hoping to get a wink or 2. I turned to look at the TV because the sound had stopped, then suddenly on came Walter Cronkite upside down, in shirt, no necktie or jacket. I sat up straight as I heard his news, and just stared at the screen. Justin ( within weeks of his 5th birthday) followed by his 3 year old, nap resistant sister, Martha, raced down the stairs and onto the couch with me. They seemed to know that something important had happened involving President Candy, and sat silently watching the screen. As their grandpa Griswold said later..something to the effect that we need to respect the elected president, that if we disagree with a politician, the way to defeat him is at the polls, not through a violent act.
