Fifty years ago tomorrow, I was in 10th grade biology class when we heard the news of JFKs assassination. Although his crown has tarnished quite a lot as details of his private life have come out, he was a hero to my young naive mind. In my grief at the time I composed the following poem. I apologize for how corny it sounds. THE YEAR WAS 1963 IT WAS EMBLAZONED IN MEMORY; IT WAS EMBLAZONED IN HISTORY; IT WAS EMBLAZONED IN ETERNITY. IT TOOK FROM US JOHN KENNEDY. THE TWENTY-SECOND OF NOVEMBER WAS THE DATE. A DAY NOT GREAT A DAY OF HATE A DAY OF FATE A DAY TOO LATE. DALLAS WAS THE PLACE. THEY DROVE AT A PARADING PACE. THE BULLETS FLEW WITH LIGHTENING HASTE. BLOOD SMEARED HIS FACE. THEY KILLED A MAN OF GRACE. WE ARE ALL TO BLAME. LET US HIDE OUR HEADS IN SHAME. PERHAPS SOMEDAY THE WORLD WILL RECLAIM THE GOODNESS THAT WENT UP IN FLAME; THE DAY GODS GLORY WELL RECLAIM.
