Fiji, july 13th, 2014 - Ive been on vacation in this beautiful place for only 10 hours now. 15 minutes I will remember forever - flying into the islands on our small Cessna airplane. Below me the ocean teal and blue, white sand strewn along beaches filled with bending palms, green luscious mountains of wet-fresh plants and twisting vines. After landing and storing luggage in my room (which I spent NO time in what so ever - on purpose!), I was escorted to a party on a grand patio 50 yards from the beach and the crashing waves. Not just beach, but the waves, along with the sky was now a pinkish purple. Strands and clusters of stars were starting to become visible in the night sky. Music got louder, people drank more, and i was put on the spot to karaoke a song i have never heard before in front of at least 40 people - all of them locals. After the epic failing of the attempt of the song the numbers at the party has dwindled. It was now just me and another vacationer, an Irish man named Conner. We sat on the ground of the grand patio looking up at the night sky, comparing it to our homelands sky. The ocean was now only visible as a dark mass that was glittered with reflections from the stars above. Conner told me he had never heard of my name before. Cole is not an uncommon name. I said. Cole? i thought your name was Coach.. We laughed at the stupid confusion, and then he started to say something i dont remember. Thats when it happened. In the middle of his sentence EVERY sound except the sound we made went silent. Waves crashing, wind moving through the trees, birds, insects, and even the sound of stillness went completely silent as if sucked into a vacuum. Whoa, did whats that? i said to Conner interrupting him mid sentence. Whats what? he said unaware of the phenomenon that just happened. Just then, amidst the silence we heard a great deep boom. The type of great sound that immediately makes you feel insignificant and unsure of yourself. The type of sound that resides deep in the earth and happens before the earth splits in two, or high in the sky as a giant asteroid tears through the stratosphere and breaks mock 1. Boom, Boom, Boom......Boom. We were both now still looking up and slowly around, only to meet with both our eyes locked in terror. At that moment wind swept from behind us and towards the ocean. We looked and saw the dark mass of sparkling sea turn black and sink back into itself. The wind whistled through the coral reefs now exposed from the withdrawing sea. I brought me knees to my chest and leaned back into the wall behind me. With my mind fully aware that I was incapable of doing anything at this point, and forgetting everything of the terrified human next to me, tsunami I said. Then i woke up.
