Filled out a survey the other night from the University of Sydney - TopicsExpress

Filled out a survey the other night from the University of Sydney asking about the extent to which Im using skills developed in my PhD to my current work role. It seemed clearly targeted to the idea of introducing further work-relevant skills to PhD study. While I wrote that, personally, I would liked to have had greater support in finding a job after the degree (e.g. my supervisor telling me what I needed to do in order to find an academic job), I also wrote that there shouldnt be more work-relevant skills in the PhD. The whole world is focussed on work-relevant skills - which you can pick up on the job anyway. The PhD should be one place where people can be free to be creative, imaginative, let their minds wander - test out all types of crazy ideas - people generally dont have that freedom in work. My god, imagine having PhD work include learning about the tedium of project management, drafting a briefing note, or writing up a slide pack presentation to management making recommendations on budget. No.
