Film Festival Report: Movie #8, Human Capital An Italian film; if it were American, its the kind of movie that would be an automatic Academy Awards contender. The kind of well-acted, serious, character-driver drama that the Academy loves. The kind of movie which you respect rather than like. You know the type. It tells the story of two families, linked because the son of one (Massimiliano) is dating the daughter of the other (Serena); and then linked because of a fatal car accident. Massimilianos father is a super-rich investment hotshot; Serenas father reminds me of William H. Macys character in Fargo: a fourth-rate hustler with more greed than sense, and no ethics to speak of. The story is told, successively, from the perspective of 3 different characters, with the key question unanswered until almost the end: who was driving the car involved in the accident? Spoiler alert: although its a good movie, it has one of the largest plot holes Ive ever seen. Because Massimiliano and Serena arent dating anymore. She broke up with him. But nobody knows that except the two of them, because shes still pretending to be his girlfriend. By the time of the accident, shes been pretending for 6 months at least. Why the heck would she be doing that? Not a hint of an explanation for this is ever given. Because there is no good reason for it, except as a plot device. In order to make the movies plot work, Serena needed to fit two criteria: 1) she needs to be so closely linked to Massimiliano that, when he gets falling-down-drunk at a party, his friends call her up to come give him a ride. And 2), she needs to be willing to let Massimiliano take the blame for something he didnt do, in order to protect somebody else. https://m.youtube/watch?v=7VnEFuYWND4
