Film Review - Philomena Meet Philomena Lee, a real life woman who comes out of her shell on the 50th anniversary of her son born out of wedlocks birth at the same time a former BBC anchor, searching for a way back into the spotlight, finds her by chance. Steve Coogan is a delight as the ex newsman but Dame Judi Dench may be finding her name called when Oscar nominations are announced for her portrayal as the simple minded Philomena. Philomena, as a young woman, falls to the charms of a very cute young man who causes a pregnancy and subsequent birth of a baby boy in a nunnery. Within a few years her son is adopted out from under her and she never sees or hears from him again. Philomena had a picture of the boy though and what follows is investigative journalism at its finest. They follow the story of the child from the UK to America to small town America. It also shows the very dark side of religion, opinions, bigots, homophobia, HIV, Republicans and politics in general. Its a beautiful and heartwarming story with an ending you didnt see coming. Unless of course youve read the book already. 2 time Oscar nominated director Stephen Frears is behind the camera and creates a marvelously crafted tale with a pleasant pace that moves along with elegance and grace. Coogan is the comic relief but also co wrote the script so he is able to attune it to his own comic timing but Dench is the glue that holds it altogether. She is marvelous and whimsical as sheltered all her life aging woman who begins to see the world for the first time under Coogans watch. Its a wonderful night at the movies. This Queen was greatly amused. 4 out of 5 Rainbows.
