Final forty-something futsal on Wednesday of last week. (Fittingly, scored four fine goals—each right-footed.) The match began badly when I completely missed a tackle early on to let an attacker glide past me and shoot home for 1-0. Our poor start continued and we were soon 2-0, then 4-1, behind before we managed to pick up the pace and begin working our way slowly back into contention. Scored my first from a narrow angle on the right to peg us back to 4-2. Then had a decent spell in goal and made one spectacular save with my buttocks (a spanking shot indeed!), although another attacker followed up and netted the rebound. At length, our initial recovery seemed to flag, however, and after a couple of gift goals to our opponents, we found ourselves trailing 5-8. Still kept plugging away, ‘though, as we retained the sense that the tide could yet turn in our favour. Scored my second when I nicked the ball off a defender and scooped it just inside the left post with my second touch, to pull us back to 8-6 down. Soon, it was 8-7 and we seemed poised for a glorious late comeback. It proved to be a false dawn, however, and our opponents calmly pinned us back to notch a further four goals and lead 12-8. Completed my hat-trick after receiving the ball from a kick-in and planting it inside the left post again (‘though this effort was somewhat controversial as our opponents claimed that my original tackle to win us the kick-in had been a little over-zealous). Now trailing 12-9, we still continued to press as the clock ran down. Scored my fourth with the last kick of the match—a well-placed side-foot from range that yet again went just inside the left post. All-in-all a great game, since although we were trailing throughout, we always felt that we were in contention and consequently never gave up—sweating buckets in the process. Final result—a well-deserved 12-10 victory for our opponents. Relaxing with a glass of champers.
