Finally I went to see A Voice of Ones Own at Malmö Art Museum. Mainly to see the video installation In the same city, under the same sky by Anna Konik. Very special to me because I had the chance to work with Anna on the Istanbul videos and now they were exhibited in my hometown. The stories told in the videos are those of women who have migrated to Poland, Sweden, Romania and Turkey, sometimes under very difficult circumstances. The stories are told by other women living in the same city (under the same sky) as them, but who are all more or less local to that city. Sometimes it feels like it is their own story and sometimes something in the background - an expensive vase, a piano or school books, or maybe their accent or their hesitation when reading - disturbs the flow of the story and you realize that something is fake. This is exactly what I like in this project. These women are not actors, they have borrowed their real faces and real voices and real homes to another real womans story. So rather than fake its the meeting of two real lives which creates a contrast that is interrupted by moments of fusion of the two lives through recognition and emotion. The screens are posed on the same level next to each other and English subtitles are running through one video screen to another, in the same line, as something universal running through different languages and lives, creating a unity between the different cities as well. And the women are looking down on the same subtitles as we the audience, reminding us that we are as distant and close to those stories as the women we have been watching.
