Finally back from the Powerlifting World Championships 2014 - TopicsExpress

Finally back from the Powerlifting World Championships 2014 (WDFPF), held Saturday Nov 1 in an old but beautiful theatre in Chisinau, Moldova (great country by the way, not spoiled from tourists, poor in our standards, but very humble, polite and happy people). It is always good to have a couple of days off after a big competition, to go find my innerself (kidding: drink beer, schnaps and finally eat whatever I like again, aka bread). No, actually it IS good to sort out the mind, reflect, and face decisions/directions for the future. Am I still on the right track with what I do? Before getting to sentimental, here is a detailed report from the competition, this is as thrilling as a Powerlifting meet can get ;) : Intro: 3 out of the 5 top lifters of the whole competition according to bodyweight and age adjusted points were in my category (being me 5th overall categories). The -100kg BW is crowded these days. It didn‘t help that the weigh (I weighed in at a comfortable 99.3kg) in was at 9am and we started the Backsquat at 5pm. Spending the whole day cheering the rest of the swiss team was fun but also exhausting. I see more grey hairs in the mirror. Facts: Here are all lifts from the top 4 -100kg, numbers are of course all kilos: Backsquat: Corrado Sirragusa 265/277.5/X282.5 Ramon Gysin 260/275.5/X280.5 Alexandru Satalenco 265/275/X280 Victor Gogu 260/X275/X275 Bench Press : Corrado Sirragusa 155/157.5/160 Ramon Gysin 157.5/165/170 Alexandru Satalenco 160/165/X170 Victor Gogu 170/180/X187.5 After the bench press I was 5kg ahead of Corrado and 2.5kg ahead of Victor and Alexandru, because they were all lighter than me. Everybody still had the chance to make the podium. I knew I could not beat Corrado in the Deadlift, he is too far ahead. Alexandru was about the same strength as me, Victors best result in competiton was behind mine and Alexandrus. So after the bench the strategy was clear: secure the second place. Deadlift: Corrado Sirragusa 300/307.5/312.5 Ramon Gysin 272.5/280/X285 Alexandru Satalenco 272.5/282.5/X285 Victor Gogu 255/X270/- As the deadlift is the last movement of the competition, the athlete is allowed to change the weight twice, but not to a weight lower than your second attempt. Alexandru raised the bar to 287.5, I raised to 285, which I did only get up to my knees. While I was failing the 285, Alexandru lowered to 285, but failed as well very close. If he would have made this lift, he would have been in second place. Yes, there is tactics involved in Powerlifting! Totals : Corrado Sirragusa (277.5/160/312.5) 750 Ramon Gysin (275.5/170/280) 725 Personal best in Squat, Bench and Total Alexandru Satalenco (275/165/282.5) 722.5 (he had more points, because he was only 95.2kg BW, but the total is, what counts) Victor Gogu (260/180/255) 695 Conclusion: All in all a very tough competition. Mentally very challenging. We left it all on the platform. Great cameraderie with Corrado who has a huge potential and will probably beat the record in the total as well next year. I will try my best to keep up with him. I beat him twice, he beat me twice. I am also very happy with the result as I was still recovering from a wrist injury (torn ligaments, bone fissure, happened by missing a heavy clean in October 2013) going into preparation for this competition. I did not bench for 5 months, no C&J and any mentionable overhead stuff for 8 months after October 2013. In February this year I did only bench 127.5kg at the nationals. The season was very rough, it took a lot out of me: Powerlifting Nationals end of Feb, CrossFit Opens with no prep at all in March. Being backup reservist for our CrossFit Regionals Team until May. European Powerlifting Champs in May, Single Lift World in June, Single Lift Euros in September. Spiced up with three Strongman comps and the comeback and two more comps in Olympic Weightlifting in September and October. Upcoming is the yearly „Are you tough enough“ (https://facebook/events/267057596817221/?ref=ts&fref=ts) CrossFit Competition at my Box. I have excactly two weeks to prepare, starting from last Friday. Mid December we go to London for „Strength in Depth“. To perform well throughout the year you need to get your shit together and you need every support you can get. So this goes to my whole Team from CrossFit Basel, to my Family, to all my friends who help out and motitvate, thank you guys for what you do for me! It is very much appreciated. I try to give back as much as possible. I just love to compete!
