Finally, here is my unsolicited opinion about the Academys - TopicsExpress

Finally, here is my unsolicited opinion about the Academys decision to rescind the nomination for Bruce Broughton and dennis Spiegels song. This is mostly a response to the Academys formal explanation. I would love to know your thoughts. The rules and regulations that state that the songs remain anonymous on the Academy submitted DVD are totally irrelevant. EVERY one of the big films including ALL of the other 4 nominated songs had postings listed in every major industry newspaper and magazine which listed the writers of the other songs. It was all there in PRINT. And everyone knows who wrote the high profile celebrity songs. This clearly creates an unfair playing field much more than Bruce simply stating to consider the song in a short email to people from his rolodex that he knew in the music industry having been in the business for over 40 years. There is no proof Bruce solicited Academy members only. I think if they are to disqualify Bruces song, they should disqualify all the nominees in which the big studios publicized their names in the trades. That would mean ALL songs would be disqualified this year. Seems like total bullshit to me. We also know that a cowardly disgruntled songwriter who was not nominated secretly hired a private investigator to look into getting Bruces song disqualified based on a silly adverting requirement stating that Bruces song was not advertised during its limited theatrical run which is an Academy requirement. The Academy responded by stating that although the studio of the film did not advertise, the theater that showed the film in limited release put an ad in the paper which satisfied that ad requirement. So unbelievably stupid. So they went after him another way and succeeded. Seems obvious to me. Many music branch Academy members are outraged by the academys decision and have started a petition demanding the decision be reversed by stating the Academy is violating their voting rights. If Bruce was really pushing his weight around, do you really think music branch members among many others would be coming out in droves speaking out against this? Unfortunately, this decision is a horrible precedent and sets the stage for a really unfair advantage for low budget and smaller independent films. The studios can throw lavish parties, place ads and totally MAKE IT KNOWN who their celebrity artists and songwriters are before the music branch votes for the nominees. But a small film has no chance competing in this totally uneven playing field. I think it would be very interesting to see an in depth investigation of all the violations including using dead peoples voting ballets, illegal campaigning and other sleazy tactics. Many are afraid to speak out for fear of being blacklisted but I think it is time for people to know the truth.
