I wont deny that I pretty much ignored it on release, beyond sharing the obligatory Battle Royale with Cheese joke, sharing in that widespread assumption that there could surely be nothing of value to any big-budget teen-oriented Hollywood movie clearly designed to fill the Twilight-shaped hole in the market. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Im genuinely awestruck that we have a mass-marketed blockbuster geared specifically toward kids which deals so explicitly with so many of the key problems with modern western culture: the hideous injustice of the rich/poor divide, the utterly vacuous nature of the gaudy celebrity culture intended to distract us from that. Its amazing that such a story is one of the most popular of our time, and theres no way todays kids can fail to get the message.
