Finally the car is back after weeks in the garage, but with a new clunking noise from the suspension! Now that I am mobile once again I spent a chunk of the day doing things around town. At one point I was close to Sauces 9 market in the Los Sauces district of Guayaquil (between the Alborada and Guayacanes districts, basically Beirut in the 70’s!) so I popped into the market just before it closed. I was in the area as I was trying to get a tooth repaired that I had shattered earlier in the week due to excessive grinding brought on by smouldering rage! From my meat guy (the only honest one, who does not shaft you on weights and quality) I bought a relatively small piece of meaty belly pork and some excellent pork chops that will be featuring in the Chaps lunches next week! I also bought a couple of pounds of very large shrimps so later tonight I will cook a batch of Shrimp Ajillo to Johnny’s own recipe which is basically to hammer the sauce with loads of garlic and chili! Despite all the shit of this place, if you look around and are careful, you can buy decent things for sensible prices. Of course if I want really cheap prices for meat I have to go to Samborondon Town itself, but Sauces 9 for me has the best price to quality match. And on the way home I had a $3 haircut, a pint of refreshing fruit cocktail for fifty cents, restocked two crates of beer each of twelve one pint bottles for $7.50 a crate, and bought three Pineapples for two dollars from a street vendor, two of which I subsequently liquidised and turned into Pineapple cocktail (just add water, ice, and a considerable amount of vodka). The latter is certainly helping me work through the month-end reports, although in the morning when I have a large glass of fruit juice straight from the fridge, I might be in for a bit of a surprise!
